Full of Chick Balls

Trying to tackle more budget friendly meals, I wanted to work on our bean supply. I think that beans are notoriously cheap and filling hence chili and red beans and rice are prime cheap-o but hearty meals. But I was looking for something a little different.


First attempt at Falafel Balls!


I knew I didn’t want to deep-fry the balls like they are traditionally done so I found this recipe for baked falafel patties and just turned them into balls instead.

  • 1/4 cup chopped onion
  • 1 (15 ounce) can garbanzo beans, rinsed and drained
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon  flour
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3 Tbls bread crumbs
  • 2 teaspoons olive oil
  1. Place garbanzo beans, garlic, cumin, coriander, salt, and baking soda in a food processor. Process until the mixture is coarsely pureed. Mix garbanzo bean mixture and onion together in a bowl. Stir in the flour and egg. Shape mixture into four large patties and let stand for 15 minutes.
  2. Preheat an oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  3. Heat olive oil in a large, oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Place the patties in the skillet; cook until golden brown, about 3 minutes on each side.
  4. Transfer skillet to the preheated oven and bake until heated through, about 10 minutes.

These were surprisingly easy to make!

In the food processor goes the beans and spices, etc.


Then mix in the onion.


And then the flour and egg.

Form the balls and roll them in a little bit of breadcrumbs.


Pan fry until brown.


Then bake in the oven for about 10 minutes until heated through.


I served them on top of some spinach.


And made a quick dressing with yogurt, lemon juice, and some spices – namely garlic powder.


They were surprisingly filling – I think I liked them! I could have done with more spice and I think I would have preferred for them to be drier, less creamy. The middle too closely resembled hummus.

And speaking of hummus…


I mean, since you already have the food processor out, and it is already dirty with chickpea stuff… Why not make hummus?


I tried Angela’s latest hummus recipe.


I thought it was a little heavy on the tahini flavor for my taste, and definitely needed a little more water to get to my preferred consistency but it was pretty good! It’s a little hard to screw up hummus.

So there you go. Hummus and Falafel. Chickpea heaven. And cheap. Love it.
